The Pfungstadtbahn is a single-track branch line that branches off the Main-Neckar Railway in Darmstadt-Eberstadt and runs from there to Pfungstadt station on the eastern outskirts of the city.

history

The Pfungstadt industrialists Wilhelm Büchner (for his ultramarine factory ) and Justus Hildebrand (for his Pfungstadt brewery ) had been promoting the construction of the line since the middle of the 19th century. Various route alternatives were considered, including the continuation in a curve to Bickenbach , but this was discarded for reasons of cost. This project had been discussed for 22 years since 1864. The line was eventually built as the state railway of the Grand Duchy of Hesse - at that time the Main-Neckar-Bahn was still a condom line with its own administration.

As " Secundärbahn " at 20 December 1886 was followed by the inauguration, at the same time received Pfungstadt in the tenure of Mayor William Schiemer the town charter . The route proved to be an economic success for both the railway and the industrial site. It was the shortest route book for the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The originally designed driveway to the area of the "blue factory" was dismantled in the 1930s. In 1934, trips outside of rush hour traffic were given up and travelers were referred to the Kraftpost (post bus).

On April 30, 1955, passenger traffic was stopped by the Deutsche Bundesbahn , freight traffic (mainly wood and sugar beet) continued until May 31, 1997. After the end of sugar beet removal in the early 1990s, this was only low. The last route book number when passenger traffic was discontinued was 315d.

New building

The Darmstadt-Dieburger local transport organization (Dadina) decided to put the disused route back into operation and to integrate it into the Odenwaldbahn . The reactivation, initially planned for December 2007, was delayed due to necessary signaling changes in Darmstadt's main station and difficulties with a level crossing in Pfungstadt. The level crossing immediately before the end of the line was refurbished and not - as previously thought - replaced by an underpass or made superfluous by shortening the line. The federal government and the state of Hesse bore the costs of reactivating the route . The total costs were set at 7 million euros, of which 4.2 million euros were attributable to the repair of the 1.8 km long route by DB Netz AG . The annual operating costs of an estimated EUR 900,000 are shared between the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and Dadina. The connection went into operation with the 2011/2012 timetable change on December 11, 2011.

Operating program

The route is operated by the railway company VIAS , which also operates the Odenwaldbahn , which begins in Darmstadt . Every second train of the Odenwaldbahn that reaches Darmstadt Central Station continues to Pfungstadt. However, they have to stay in Darmstadt for around 20 minutes to allow the connection. The intermediate courses only commute between Darmstadt and Pfungstadt. Both lines are also separated according to schedule: while the Odenwaldbahn operates as RMV line 65, the Pfungstadtbahn has received line number 66. The route is listed under the number 650.1 in the Deutsche Bahn timetable.

The journey time to Pfungstadt is twelve minutes with stops in Darmstadt Süd and Darmstadt-Eberstadt.

On the occasion of an order for four more railcars for the Odenwaldbahn, the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund had already planned an additional “ Itino ” vehicle for the extension to Pfungstadt in November 2007 .

The association Pro Bahn criticized the thin schedule on the weekend and the early closing time in the evening as a "half-hearted offer".

Pfungstadt station

Pfungstadt station in December 2011

The station ( 49 ° 48 ′ 22.5 ″  N , 8 ° 36 ′ 28.6 ″  E ) was opened at the same time as the railway line. Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse-Darmstadt took this as an opportunity to grant Pfungstadt city rights . By mid-May 1930, the station was Pfungstadt simultaneously Locomotive train station . The original station building was demolished after passenger traffic ceased.

For the reactivation, a new, simply equipped station with a 140 meter long platform was built on the site of the historic train station. A bus turning loop and a park and ride car park provide a connection to local traffic. Of the total costs of 2.8 million euros, the state of Hesse took on 170,000 euros, the rest was shared by the city and federal government.
