The Bjärred – Lund railway was a standard-gauge Swedish railway line . It was built by Lund – Bjärreds Järnvägsaktiebolag (LBJ), a private railway company , between Bjärred and Lund .

history

In the 1890s, the leading social classes in Lund, inspired by Gothenburg's Säröbana and Stockholm's Saltsjöbana , wanted a rail link to be built in Lund to the seaside resort of Bjärred, eleven kilometers away. Some wealthy residents saw good profit prospects if Bjärred became a posh suburb of Lund.

In 1897 shares could be subscribed for such a project. The city of Lund was very interested and subscribed to subscription rights worth 100,000 kroner with a total planned share capital of 250,000 kroner.

Lund – Bjärreds Järnvägsaktiebolag

On February 18, 1898 the Lund – Bjärreds Järnvägsaktiebolag was constituted . A license for an electric tram with a gauge of 1000 mm was applied for, an innovation at that time. The construction project was approved on October 30, 1899, but was not implemented as a tram. For many decision-makers, an electricity-powered railway was completely new and so they decided to instead use a steam-powered railway with a track width of 1435 mm. The relevant changes to the concession were requested and granted on July 11, 1900.

The first chairman of Lund – Bjärreds Järnvägsaktiebolag was consul JWM Westrup from 1901 to 1907, and from 1905 to 1910 he was also chairman of Lund – Revinge Järnvägsaktiebolag . The first traffic director was postmaster CA Brinck from 1901 to 1906.

Track construction

The work began before the license was granted. A viaduct and various technical rules delayed construction. On July 26, 1901, the eleven-kilometer route was opened to public transport. Since none of the steam locomotives and passenger cars ordered had been delivered at the opening, locomotives and cars had to be borrowed from other companies for the opening train.

The line had its own terminus in Lund, which was west of the Lund central station of the SJ . This station was also called Lund at first, but was renamed Lunds västra on October 1, 1903 due to the possibility of confusion .

The link from Leråkra to Flädie was opened in 1904.

Technical specifications

The total costs for the railway construction including the locomotives and wagons amounted to 670,722 crowns. For this purpose, a standard gauge railway line with a length of 10.964 km was created. The steel rails weighed 31 kg / m per meter, the minimum radius was 300 meters and the maximum gradient was 16 ‰. The top speed was 50 km / h.

In total, the following steam locomotives were procured:

number Surname design type Wheel alignment Manufacturer Fabr.-No./

1 Tank locomotive B 1 t Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun , Falun 11

Taken over by BLHJ in 1918, in 1925 to Malmö Stuveri , there "Dragaren 1" , in 1936 to SSA in Trelleborg, scrapped in 1949.
2 Tank locomotive B 1 t Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun, Falun 12
1901

One two-axle and two bogie passenger cars as well as four two-axle baggage and freight cars were procured for train operation. A two-axle parallel locomotive shed and a small workshop were built in Lunds västra . This building was demolished in 1963.

Economic development and management by SJ

The route developed poorly, so that the city of Lund had to take out further loans for the operation as early as 1903. This condition did not change until 1909, so that the railway company was bankrupt in 1910 . That is why Statens Järnvägar took over management from May 13, 1910, which it held until January 1, 1911.

Lund stads järnvägar

From 1911, after a reconstruction of the company, it was placed under a joint administration run by the city of Lund with the Lund – Revinge Järnväg (LReJ). From 1912 this management company was called Lund stads järnvägar .

electrification

The idea of electrifying the Lund – Bjärred railway was not given up. On February 26, 1915 it was decided to apply for a permit for the electrification of the line. This was granted and work began. Electrical operation began on May 26, 1916. The costs for this amounted to 133,000 kroner, of which 43,000 kroner fell on the purchased electric multiple unit. The contact wire voltage was 15 kV / 15 Hz.

The technical data of the electric vehicles were:

Bjärred – Lund – Harlösa Järnväg

In 1918, Lund demanded that the two railway companies Lund – Bjärreds Järnvägsaktiebolag (LBJ) and Lund – Revinge Järnväg (LReJ), managed by Lund stads järnvägar , should be merged into one railway company. This was completed, from July 1, 1918, the two previous companies went into a new company, Bjärred – Lund – Harlösa Järnväg (BLHJ).

Shutdown and demolition

All traffic on the line ceased on June 15, 1939, the line was dismantled between 1940 and 1958.
