The Franzius is a replica of a Weser barge , a type of sailing ship with a shallow draft that was used from the 17th to the 19th century to transport goods on the Weser . It is of particular importance because no original Weser barge has survived.
history
The Franzius was laid down on the Bremer Bootsbau Vegesack gGmbH in 1994 . The ship was christened in 2000 by the Senator for Labor, Health, Youth and Social Affairs Hilde Adolf . The sailing ship was named after the hydraulic engineer Ludwig Franzius (1832–1903), who at the end of the 19th century carried out the Weser correction, the straightening and deepening of the heavily silted Lower Weser between the mouth and the ports in Bremen . As a result, this improvement in the navigability of the river made the Weser barges superfluous, as larger cargo ships could now go directly to Bremen.
construction
As a replica of a Weser barge, it is a flat-bottomed ship with side swords that is suitable for navigating shallow, tidal waters and for drying out . The 28.57-meter-long and 6.36-meter-wide hull is made of wood in a modern form-glued construction and ends at the stern in a flat mirror .
The one and a half mast with gaff rigging has a main mast (with a height of 21.95 meters) and a mizzen mast (with a height of 18.20 meters). The ship's height from the waterline is 23.62 meters. The sail area covers a total of 273 m².
In the middle of the ship there is a pointed roof-shaped structure, which in the historical Weser barges was the hatch to the cargo hold. At the Franzius , the mass is located here . The ship has 20 berths for the 2 to 4 man crew and the passengers.
use
Today the ship is operated by the Bremer Weserkahn “Franzius” eV association. Between April and October the Franzius regularly undertakes day trips on the Weser between Vegesack and Bremerhaven or trips lasting several days into the Wadden Sea and along the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas from the Netherlands to Poland . It has space for 30 day guests or 16 passengers for trips lasting several days. In the winter months, the ship is usually in Vegesack harbor .
In 2010 the Franzius was represented at the Sail Bremerhaven .
