The Mannheim-Käfertal-Heddesheim railway is a meter-gauge railway line near Mannheim operated by the RNV , formerly the Oberrheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft AG (OEG), according to the Railway Construction and Operating Regulations for Narrow Gauge Railways (ESBO) . The 6.5 km long narrow-gauge railway is still owned by MVV Verkehr GmbH as the successor to the OEG. Also due to the used setup - tram - railcars will rather than a public Regional tramway perceived. The line is a branch line and electronically signaled train control is used as the operating procedure .

history

As a branch of the Mannheim – Weinheim line, opened in 1887, the line was opened on May 1, 1909 by the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (SEG). However, it was temporarily unpopular with the Wallstadt citizens, as the Mannheim tram , which ended in the nearby Feudenheim, offered a cheaper fare, a more frequent train route and better connections to Mannheim city center, so that many citizens accepted the walk from Wallstadt to Feudenheim. Originally one of four independently operated OEG lines ran to Heddesheim that had no line number. The car shed was in Heddesheim.

From March 26 to June 18, 1945 operations were stopped due to the war.

The Käfertal – Heddesheim branch line has been electrically operated since November 1, 1946. The electrification took place with material from the disused Feudenheim – Mannheim line. After the complete electrification of the OEG route triangle, the line to Mannheim Hauptbahnhof was extended and designated as Line C.

From June 2, 1957, the trains ran every half hour, in the mornings they did not continue to Mannheim until September 29, 1963.

From July 1, 1971 to June 31, 1973, there was an economy schedule with a worsened frequency, the evening trains were replaced by buses. From May 28, 1978, the trains only ran to Käfertal on Sundays, later this also applied to trains at lunchtime on school-free days.

1979 route block was introduced. The line was then controlled from the Siemens push button relay interlocking in Käfertal, which was commissioned in 1978.

From July 1982 until May 21, 1993 , GT6s with B4 sidecars were used on the route from Bielefeld .

On May 23, 1993, a half-hourly service was introduced again. The top speed was increased from 60 km / h to 80 km / h.

Car of the Ludwigshafen transport company as line 4 in Wallstadt station

In 1995 the MVG 2000 concept was implemented, which also brought major changes for the OEG. The line to Heddesheim became part of a tram line operated by the then MVG (later MVV-V) and Verkehrsbetriebe Ludwigshafen GmbH (VBL). Since then, instead of the OEG, tram line 4 has run continuously from Heddesheim to Ludwigshafen - Oggersheim and Bad Dürkheim.

The second track in Im Rott station has been in operation since September 9, 2001.

Construction site of the A6 near Mannheim-Wallstadt: the train is crossing a temporary bridge

From November 2006 to December 2008, as part of the renovation of the A6 motorway, the lane of the motorway was lowered 10 meters and equipped with noise barriers. The railway no longer ran under, but over the motorway. A temporary bridge was erected during construction. The new bridge was double-tracked, although initially only one track was laid.

In December 2008, the RHB , which previously turned in Mannheim city center , was integrated into line 4. The connection to Bad Dürkheim was already practiced in the evening traffic. The vehicles used now are mainly GT6N and, more rarely, RNV8ER .

Due to the increased demand due to the new building area in Wallstadt, a compression of the cycle from 20 minutes at that time to a ten-minute cycle was planned. This was not yet possible because of the single-track route to Heddesheim. In 2012, the construction of a turning loop east of the flyover built in 2008 over the A6 began. The second track above the A6 was installed. The loop was put into operation when the timetable changed in December 2012, which meant that trains ending in Käfertal could travel to Wallstadt every 10 minutes during the rush hour.

The route between Wallstadt and Heddesheim

Since the opening of the tram route to Gartenstadt , the new destination of line 4 from Bad Dürkheim, in June 2016, line 4 no longer runs on the route, but line 5A (Heddesheim - Wallstadt - Käfertal - Rosengarten - Mannheim Hauptbahnhof (- Edingen )) and during rush hour line 15 (Wallstadt Ost - Schafweide - Mannheim Hauptbahnhof (transfer to line 5A)). During rush hour, when no trains on line 5 ended up in Käfertal, the trains on line 5A in the city center transfer to line 5 to Heidelberg, otherwise to line 15 back to Wallstadt. A wing of the ring line in Käfertal was originally planned.

Between 2010 and 2014, the complete signal systems and interlocking technology were renewed in two stages. Since spring 2014, the entire route has been equipped with the Ks signal system.

Instead of Dr. Müller estate management

For loading of sugar beet from Straßenheim existed until 1971 Won Ladenburg way the junction Dr. Müller'sche Gutsverwaltung ( Frank'sche Gutsverwaltung , colloquially known as the sugar beet station until the middle of the 20th century ), which consisted of a 142 m long siding with a usable length of 105 m north of the main line and a loading ramp on this. The loading ramp is still there as a ruin.

Track plan from 1961

At first there was a main track in Heddesheim in addition to the main track to the south and a side track next to it. From these three, the four-track wagon hall made by Donges Stahlbau could be reached. This was shut down on June 1, 1969, then used as a bus parking hall and demolished at the end of 1991 after it had been used as a warehouse by another company and had been vacant for a long time. Another siding was north with a weighbridge and a loading ramp at the goods hall next to the station building. The twelve points and a track block were operated locally by the dispatcher until the route block was introduced.

Since June 10, 1977 the line has ended in a turning loop at Heddesheim station. Due to the insufficient distance between the compulsory rails, however, the loop arch could only be used from the beginning of August.
