The Wrist – Itzehoe railway was a single-track branch line in Schleswig-Holstein.

Route description

The approximately 22 kilometer long route connected the place Wrist on the Hamburg-Altona-Kiel railway line with the western district town of Itzehoe on the Marschbahn . The main stop on the way was the train station in the small town of Kellinghusen . The route led through a flat Geest landscape and, in addition to serving the subway stations, served as a direct connection from Itzehoe to Wrist, Neumünster and Kiel , avoiding the approximately 60-kilometer detour via Elmshorn .

history

Lockstedter Lager station in 1913

The line was put into operation on August 1, 1889. In 1914, seven pairs of trains ran the entire route every day, plus four pairs of trains between Kellinghusen and Wrist. Nine pairs of trains are listed in the timetable from 1944, in 1963 there were twelve pairs of trains on weekdays; only buses ran on public holidays. On September 27, 1975, rail passenger traffic was discontinued due to insufficient demand and replaced by buses.

In freight traffic, the following sections of the route were still served after the suspension of passenger traffic: Itzehoe– Edendorf until December 31, 1994 and Kellinghusen - Hohenlockstedt until March 1, 1994, Wrist – Kellinghusen until May 28, 1995.

On April 1, 1995, the Itzehoe – Edendorf section was officially closed, and the remainder of the Wrist – Kellinghusen section on January 1, 1996.

The route was kilometered from Hamburg-Altona train station as the starting point.

Current condition

Efforts were made to reactivate the route. However, in 2012 only the tracks between the Itzehoer Bahnhof and the Edendorf district and short remnants at the Wrist station in the direction of Kellinghusen were left. In Hohenlockstedt, the route is partially built with single-family houses. Between Edendorf and Hohenlockstedt, it was converted into a cycle path . In February 2015, dismantling began between Itzehoe and Edendorf. The route becomes part of the aforementioned cycle path.

Since the end of 2011, the state of Schleswig-Holstein has been aiming to reactivate the Wrist – Kellinghusen section. With the timetable change in December 2014, a new regional train line Hamburg-Elmshorn-Wrist was introduced, which is to be extended to Kellinghusen in the future. It is operated by the nordbahn railway company.

The mayor of the city of Kellinghusen, Axel Pietsch, is open to the reactivation plans. On June 20, 2012, the Kellinghusener city council also voted unanimously in favor of the project. As of March 2018, the railway line is still not in operation, but the financing is secured. In December 2019, the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament approved the project.
