The Ostrava – Frýdek-Místek railway is a railway line in the Czech Republic that was originally built by the kk priv. Ostrau-Friedlander Eisenbahn (OFE) as part of their main connection from Mährisch Ostrau to Friedland an der Ostrawitza. It runs from Ostrava ( Mährisch Ostrau ) to Frýdek-Místek ( Friedeck-Mistek ). While the section from Ostrava hlavní nádraží to Ostrava-Kunčice is classified as a main line ("celostatní dráha"), the remaining section was downgraded in 2014 to a branch line ("regionální dráha").

history

OFE received the concession for the Mährisch Ostrau – Friedland line on January 2, 1869. The concessionaires were obliged to start construction of the line within one year and complete it within two years. In addition, the concession deed allowed that the line was initially only allowed to be single-tracked. The laying of a second track was only required with an annual gross profit of 200,000  florins per Austrian mile for two consecutive years. The duration of the license was set at 80 years from the date the license was granted, but redemption by the state was possible at any time after 30 years. The line was opened on January 1st, 1871. The operation was carried out by the kk priv. Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn (KFNB) for the account of the Ostrau-Friedlander Eisenbahn.

On June 1, 1888, the further route from Friedek-Mistek to Friedland came to the KFNB. It was henceforth part of the Moravian-Silesian city railway from Kojetín to Bielitz .

After the nationalization of the KFNB, the kk Nordbahndirektion of the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) took over the management from January 1st, 1907 . In 1912 the timetable indicated seven mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains on weekdays, and seven on Sundays. They needed 50-67 minutes for the 23-kilometer route.

After the end of the First World War, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) took over the management.

With the nationalization of the OFE on January 1, 1936, the infrastructure also belonged to the ČSD network from then on.

During the Second World War , the route lay entirely in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . The operators were now the Protectorate Railways Bohemia and Moravia (ČMD-BMB). On May 9, 1945, the entire line came back to the ČSD.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

In the years 2005 to 2007 the section Ostrava hlavní nádraží – Ostrava-Kunčice received an electrical contact line. Electric rail operations opened there on December 7, 2007.

In the 2012 timetable, lines S6 (Ostrava hl. N. – Frenštát pod Radhoštěm) and R1 (Opava východ – Ostrava-Svinov – Ostrava hl. N. – Havířov – Český Těšín) of the local transport system Esko v Moravskoslezském kraji operate on the route .

The section Ostrava-Kunčice-Frýdek-Místek was downgraded to a branch line in 2014.
