The bayonet palm lily ( Yucca treculiana , also Yucca treculeana ; common names in different languages: Trecul's Yucca, Spanish-Dagger, Spanish Bayonet, Don Quixotes-Lance, Pita, Palma-Pita, Palme de Datiles, Palma Loca, Texas-Bayonet ) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The Yucca treculiana , which grows solitary or with a few trunks, reaches a height of 2.5 to 6 meters. The stiff, smooth, blue, gray, yellow, fibrous 0.4 to 1.3 meter long leaves are arranged in a variable manner.

The upright, branched, dense inflorescence that begins between the leaves is 0.8 to 1.3 meters long. The spherical, bell-shaped flowers are hermaphroditic and threefold. The bracts are white to cream in color, sometimes the upper part of the outer is purple. They are 2 to 7.5 cm long and wide. The flowering period extends from March to April.

The bayonet palm lily is classified within the genus in the Yucca section in the Treculianae series. It is related to yucca torreyi . In contrast to this, however, it does not form fibers on the leaf edges.

When dry, the bayonet palm lily is frost hardy to minus 15 ° C. Specimens can be seen in Denver, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

distribution

The bayonet palm lily is common in the Chihuahua Desert in Mexico in the states of Coahuila , Nuevo León , Tamaulipas , Durango and in the USA in chaparral regions. This species is often associated with yucca torreyi , yucca elata , yucca baccata , yucca rupicola , various agave species and cactus species .
