Balachani ( Russian Балахани ) is a village (selo) in the Russian Republic of Dagestan , in Unzukul district .

It is located in the foothills of the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus , which rises a little southwest of the place with the Arakmeer mountain up to 2356  m above sea level. The village is located in a high valley above the river Avarskoje Koisu , the right source river of the Sulak , a good 60 kilometers as the crow flies southwest of the republic capital Makhachkala and 12 kilometers southeast of the Unzukul Rajon center . It is inhabited by Avars . At the beginning of 2011 the village had around a thousand inhabitants.

The rural community (selskoje posselenije) Selsowet Balachanski with its administrative seat in Balachani also includes the small villages Moksoch (7 km northwest) and Schulatuta. The community has a total of 2383 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The village has a school.

One of the two suicide bombers in the 2010 Moscow Metro attacks , Mariam Sharipova, came from Balachani.
