Baldassarre Monti (born April 19, 1961 in Casalmaggiore ( CR ), † November 20, 2008 in Sorbolo ( PR )) was an Italian motorcycle racer .

Career

Baldassarre Monti, nicknamed "Sarre", began motorcycling in 1986 . In 1988 he started in his home country in 37 races, of which he won 28 and thus crowned himself the champion of the Italian sports production championship.

For the 1989 season he moved to the Superbike World Championship , where he started on a Ducati 851 from the works team Squadra Corse Ducati . Already in his debut year, Monti achieved his first podium finish with third place in the second race of the Italian race in Enna-Pergusa . In the overall standings, the Italian finished eighth with 99 points, making him second-best Ducati rider after Raymond Roche . In the Italian Superbike Championship , Monti won the title this season.

In 1990 Baldassarre Monti started on a Honda RC 30 of the Honda factory team Rumi / RCM at the side of the world champion of the past two years, Fred Merkel . The Italian achieved two second and one third place and was again eighth in the World Cup. He also secured pole position at the races in France and Italy . In the following season , Monti was only 26th overall in the same team after a serious accident in Zeltweg, Austria . In 1992 he took 17th place and was still the best pilot from the Japanese manufacturer.

The 1993 season denied Baldassarre Monti first on a Ducati 888 of the team Red Devil Racing and later Yamaha in the Team Yamaha BYRD and was 25th in the driver standings.

In 1994 Monti competed in the German Superbike Championship on a Ducati from the Rubatto Lortz team. A serious accident at the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man on June 1, 1994, as a result of which the Italian was in a coma for three months , ended Baldassarre Monti's career.

Deadly accident

Baldassarre Monti was killed in a traffic accident on November 20, 2008 . He was on his way home with his scooter around 6:30 p.m. when he collided head-on with a car on the road between Poviglio and Sorbolo and was dead on the spot.
