Ballin's steamship shipping company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ballins Dampfschiff-Rhederei-Gesellschaft was a shipping company founded by Albert Ballin in Hamburg in 1889 , which was active in the seaside resort service to Helgoland , Föhr , Sylt , Amrum and Norderney .

history

founding

Ballin - who had resigned from the Morris & Co emigration agency the year before and had been appointed to the board of HAPAG - bought the Freia side paddle steamer from Blohm & Voss in 1889 , which had been operating the ship in seaside resorts to Helgoland, Wyk auf Föhr and Norderney and had chartered it for liner service on the Riviera in winter . With this purchase he founded his Ballins steamship shipping company. In 1890 he bought the side wheel steamer Cuxhaven as a second ship .

Ballin-Braeunlich cooperation

Since he had taken over financially with this second purchase, Ballin sold the Freia in 1890 to the shipping company JF Braeunlich in Stettin for use in the seaside resort tourism of Western Pomerania and founded the Stettiner seaside bathing company Ballin & Braeunlich with Braeunlich , into which he owned his Cuxhaven brought in. Ballin & Braeunlich drove from Stettin via Swinoujscie (as home port ), to Misdroy , Ahlbeck , Heringsdorf and Zinnowitz . Trips to Rügen were also planned . When the Cuxhaven stranded on the Vinetabank near Zinnowitz on July 27, 1891 and had to be abandoned, this meant the end of the short-lived Stettin seaside shipping company Ballin & Braeunlich and the cooperation between Braeunlich and Ballin.

Seaside bathing service North Sea

Ballin now concentrated again on the island traffic off the North Sea coast. Towards the end of 1890 he had already bought the St Tudno (ex Cobra ) side- paddle steamer, built in Scotland in 1889, from the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company in Govan , Glasgow , given the ship its original name Cobra and used it as a so-called turbine express steamer in the seaside resort service on the route Hamburg - Helgoland - Sylt used. In 1891 he bought the Lady Gwendoline , also a side paddle steamer built in Scotland in 1889, from the shipping company Edwards, Robertson & Co. in Cardiff , renamed her Ariadne , and also drove with her from Hamburg and Cuxhaven to Sylt, Föhr , Norderney and Amrum . Ballin's line trips with the Cobra and the Ariadne to Helgoland, Norderney and the North Frisian Islands were serious competition for the seaside resort service operated by North German Lloyd from Geestemünde and intensified even more with the commissioning of the side paddle steamer Princess Heinrich in 1896 and then the twin screw steamer Silvana in 1897. The Ariadne, on the other hand, was sold to HAPAG on August 27, 1895, of which Ballin had been General Manager since 1899; this moved the ship as a tender to Cherbourg .

North Sea Line Dampfschiffs-GmbH

From 1897 Ballins Reederei operated under the name Nordsee-Linie Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft mbH.

In order to better utilize its small fleet, the Nordsee-Linie chartered the Cobra to HAPAG in the winter months from 1902/03 ; the ship then operated in winter between Genoa , Nice and Monaco until 1913/14 and returned to the seaside resort service between Hamburg, Helgoland and Sylt in the summer months. From 1904/05 onwards, Princess Heinrich was also chartered out to HAPAG every winter and was employed in the Genoa Riviera service until 1913/14.

The End

On January 1, 1905, the North Sea Line was taken over by HAPAG, where Ballin had become General Manager in 1899. Her three ships - Cobra , Princess Heinrich and Silvana - remained in service at the seaside resort. The ordered yet in 1904 from the North Sea Line Emperor went with the takeover still on the slipway also the HAPAG.
