Baltasar Corrada del Río (born April 10, 1935 in Morovis ; † March 11, 2018 ) was a Puerto Rican politician . Between 1977 and 1985 he represented Puerto Rico as a Resident Commissioner in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Baltasar Corrada del Río attended public schools in his homeland. In 1952 he graduated from Colegio Ponceno de Varones High School . He then studied at the University of Puerto Rico until 1956 . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his license to practice law in 1959, he began to work in this profession in San Juan . In 1969 he became a member of the local civil rights commission. He also wrote articles for the El Mundo newspaper at the time . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party and the Puerto Rican Partido Nuevo Progresista .

In the congressional elections of 1976 Corrada was elected for four years as a non-voting delegate to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Jaime Rexach Benítez on January 3, 1977 . After re-election for another four years, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1985 . He campaigned for Puerto Rico to become a regular state in the United States. In 1984 he renounced another candidacy.

Between 1985 and 1989 Corrada del Río was mayor of the Puerto Rican capital San Juan; from 1993 to 1995 he served as Secretary of State for this US territory. Between 1995 and 2005 he was a judge at the local Supreme Court. In 1988 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of Puerto Rico. Most recently, he worked as an independent lawyer in an advisory capacity for a large law firm in Puerto Rico.

He died on March 11, 2018 at the age of 82. He suffered from Alzheimer's disease .
