Jaime Rexach Benítez
Jaime Rexach Benítez (born October 29, 1908 in Vieques , † May 30, 2001 in San Juan ) was a Puerto Rican politician . Between 1973 and 1977 he represented Puerto Rico as a Resident Commissioner in the United States House of Representatives .
Career
Jaime Benítez attended public schools in his homeland until 1926. He then studied until 1931 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC He then studied until 1938 at the University of Chicago . In the following years he appeared as an author in addition to his other activities. From 1931 to 1942 he was a faculty member at the University of Puerto Rico . This time was interrupted by his studies in Chicago . Between 1942 and 1966 he was Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico; from 1966 to 1971 he acted as president of the university system there. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party and the Puerto Rican Partido Popular Democrático . In 1951 and 1952, Benítez took part in a constitutional convention in his homeland. He also served as Chairman of the Committee on Bill of Rights . From 1948 to 1954 he was a member of the American Commission at UNESCO . In 1948 he was also a member of the US delegation to a university conference in Utrecht . In 1950 and 1952 he was also at UNESCO conferences in Paris and Havana . In 1956 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1957 and 1958 he served as President of the National Association of State Universities . In July 1976, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where Jimmy Carter was nominated as a presidential candidate.
In the congressional elections of 1972 Benítez was elected as a non-voting delegate for four years to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded Jorge Luis Córdova on January 3, 1973 . He could remain in Congress until January 3, 1977 . In 1976 he was not confirmed. Between 1980 and 1986 he was a professor at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico . He died on May 30, 2001 in San Juan.
