Balthasar Cellarius (born October 10, 1614 in Rottleben , Thuringia ; † September 15, 1689 in Helmstedt , Lower Saxony ) was a German Protestant theologian and professor at the University of Helmstedt .

Life

Growing up in modest circumstances as the son of a pastor, he studied at the grammar school in Gera . In 1632 he enrolled at the University of Jena , started studying theology and in 1636 obtained the academic degree of a master's degree . From 1637 to 1641 he worked as a lecturer and writer. After working in Wittenberg for a year from 1641 , he went to Rudolstadt and was employed in the service of a noble Schwarzburg citizen.

In 1642 he went to the University of Helmstedt , where he gave lectures and made the acquaintance of Georg Calixt and Konrad Hornejus and joined their ideas. On July 5, 1644, he was called to Braunschweig to become a preacher at St. Ulrici Church . In 1646 he was called back to Helmstedt as general superintendent at Calixt's suggestion . At the same time he received a professorship at the theological faculty of the University of Helmstedt. However, his appointment in these two offices did not take place until 1648, when he had prevailed against Justus Gesenius . In 1662 he became Vice Rector of the University of Helmstedt.

In Helmstedt he took on the second theological professorship, gave lectures on the New Testament , explained the pericopes and was able to take part in the polemics against the Catholic Church. When the University of Helmstedt was visited in 1650, he received next to Gerhard Titius († 1681) the academic degree of doctor of theology and was thus appointed abbot of the Mariental monastery . However , he largely abstained from the syncretic dispute with the Orthodox Lutherans . On April 10, 1656, he gave the funeral oration for his teacher Calixt. Cellarius died in 1689 and was buried in St. Stephen's Church in Helmstedt.
