The banana pipebat ( Neoromicia nanus ) is a species of African bat.

Appearance

As one of the smallest of all bats , the banana pipistrelle measures 3.6 to 4 cm (head body length), plus a 2.4 to 4.1 cm tail. The fur is dark brown, the tips of the hair are yellow-brown or red-brown. The banana pipistrelle bat can be distinguished from the otherwise very similar species Pipistrellus nanulus in that the hair on the whole body is two-colored, but in the case of nanulus it is on the belly side.

distribution

The banana pipebat lives all over sub- Saharan Africa, apart from deserts and semi-deserts. It is also native to Madagascar . The habitats of the banana pipistrelle are rainforests, tree savannahs and plantations.

Way of life

Like all members of its genus, the banana pipebat is a pure insect eater. Moths and beetles make up the majority of the diet.

The leaves of banana plants and strelitzia serve as sleeping places, but nowadays also human buildings. Banana pipebats spend the night alone, in small groups, or in colonies of up to 150 individuals. Such groups usually consist of one male and several females. Occasionally these groups have been called harems , but they are not permanent and constantly change their composition.

Systematics

There are two scientific names for the banana pipistrelle : Pipistrellus nanus and Pipistrellus africanus . The International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) declared the name africanus invalid in 2005 .

Today the banana pipistrelle is listed in the genus Neoromicia instead of the genus Pipistrellus .

Seven subspecies of the banana pipefish are distinguished:

The populations of the countries not mentioned (e.g. Republic of the Congo , Cameroon , Madagascar ) have not yet been examined for their subspecies.
