Banaue rice terraces

Rice terraces in 2003

The Banaue rice terraces , which are at least 2000 years old, are part of the rice terraces in the Philippine Cordilleras , which once stretched from the province of Cagayan in the northeast to the province of Quezon in the far south. They reach up to a height of 1500 m above sea level.

More rice terraces

Amphitheater-shaped rice terraces of Batad (Ifugao) . Size comparison: huts on the saddle spur, about to the right of the center of the picture in the cloud shadow, are over an hour's walk away.

The oldest parts are about 20 km west of Banaue around the Baranggay Batad. Here they are particularly spectacular and laid out like an oversized amphitheater. Other rice terraces and hot springs are well worth seeing in Hapao. There are only organized jeepney tours for tourists to both destinations, all others are logistically difficult to access due to the slope conditions and irregular transport connections.

Ecology in the rice terraces

Many rice terraces are now falling into disrepair, major erosion damage is to be lamented, because the arduous agriculture without the possibility of using machines at least doubles the price compared to the competition from the flatlands. The giant apple snail ( Pomacea canaliculata ) was only introduced in the early 1980s to improve the protein supply of the population. It turns out, however, that she eats young saplings, small farm fish, edible clams, etc. to a large extent. In addition, apple snails are probably the most common intermediate host of the pair leech Schistosoma , a disease that leads to schistosomiasis (schistosomiasis) in humans . Infection can occur through eating uncooked snail meat, even swallowing water in which the affected animals live. So far it is not known (!) That the Philippines are infected; however, the tropical region belongs to a vacant risk area.

A giant earthworm ( (Poly) pheretima elongata , Ifugao Olang) that is up to 45 cm long and as thick as a finger , which literally perforates them , brings with it two further difficulties that affect the durability of the clay walls in particular . It is still up to the scientific discussion whether this is an old species or an evolutionary adaptation, and the like. a. due to decades of pesticide use. Similarly, the mole cricket ( Gryllotalpa major ) damages . With its front, evolutionarily transformed and mole-like grave legs, it creates passages and lives underground. It damages roots while digging, but only eats animal food, especially larvae, insects and other invertebrates. The larvae that hatch from up to 1000 eggs are cared for in a special incubation chamber. Both pests have no natural enemies, which is more indicative of a recent adaptation or introduction.

Not to be underestimated is the loss due to bird feeding , which can amount to up to 30% of the harvest in remote rice fields. The biggest problem, however, is the emigration of the younger generation who are trying their luck in tourism and the larger cities.

State organizations and above all NGOs try to tackle these problems in international cooperation, in particular to find ways to achieve higher levels of profitability. In the medium term, an attempt is being made to encourage farmers to cultivate more varied, rare varieties in a sustainable, ecological manner. Furthermore, the advantages of cooperatives are shown in order to reduce costs for the individual: z. B. organize joint transports to and from, target customer acquisition, develop the market for upscale consumption, etc.

So the native, natural flavor renders containing Tinawon rice on the market three times the revenue compared to normal rice . At the same time, the yield is to be improved by double harvesting by targeting fish , in particular the striped snakehead ( Channa striata (Ifugao dolog)) and, more recently, the cichlid Tilapia zillii and the carp-like East Asian mud whip ( Misgurnus), which is native to China , Southeast Asia and Japan anguillicaudatus , Ifugao [u] yuyuh; introduced from Japan for the first time in 1931) can be introduced into the rice fields. These extremely tasty, little fingers thick, up to max. 25 cm long mud dwellers, which with their meandering swimming motion are a bit reminiscent of eels, achieve very high prices on the financially strong gourmet market. They are only allowed to be caught at certain times after the rice harvest, which makes them even more exclusive. As crop rotation are in the so-called. "Dry season" u. a. Sweet potatoes were grown, in the following years grain, mongo beans (from the Chinese mung bean Phaseolus aureus ) and taro .

Ethnic festivals in the region

The Cordilleria Administrative Region ( CAR ) is inhabited by 171 ethnolinguistic groups; 92% of the population of this region belong to indigenous ethnic groups - the highest proportion in the island nation.

The "Banaue Imbayah", an ethnic festival organized predominantly by members of the Ifugao tribe, has been taking place every three years since 1979 . The word comes from Bayah and means rice wine . Bumayah or Imbayah means either "high ethos " or "wealth" - an occasion where rice wine flowed in abundance from magical jugs passed down from generation to generation. A festival with a historical and cultural background that was held for the dead and the gods. A time that is more suitable for wedding preparations than any other. The men wear their traditional red G-strings (loincloths) with yellow lines and black / white stripes in which fine, simple patterns are incorporated, in the same style: the headband with red, light yellow and golden yellow tassels. Originally it was a rattan ribbon with leaves from the dragon tree ( Dracaena fragrans var. ). As a status symbol, tusks of wild boars are worn on a necklace. The women wear colorful tapis (skirts) and valuable jewelry. The social status can be seen especially in their tapis patterns.

Nowadays it is still less intended as a tourist spectacle, but serves the integration and self-presentation of the (until recently quite rebellious) locals (desired by the Philippine government). In the villages of the region - with a focus on Banaue - the Ifugao give dances, chants, demonstrations on (backstrap) weaving and also offer other handicrafts. In addition, agricultural products are presented, in particular, but not only, all possible varieties of sweet, tasty rice wine. There are also competitions such as chopping wood, wood carving and a race on wooden bicycles, some of which are imaginatively self-made, a kind of soap box race on two wheels at up to 50 km / h. Typical local sports are also carried out as competitions. This includes the "royal" Huktingngan . A duel in which one foot is pulled up to the rear with both hands. In this position the opponent is to be brought off balance with the shoulder. Others are: Akkad (stilt race), Guyyud (rope pulling), Hanggul (arm wrestling), Bartung / Bangunan ("leg pressing"), Dopap (wrestling) and Mumbayu (pounding rice). At another competition, an old tradition of settling disputes is used. The pedunculate flower grass (Ifugao runo, Miscanthus floridulus) is used, from whose shaft darts are made. One man from each of the disputing parties turned his back to the opponent, while the latter tried to score as many hits as possible within a certain period of time. Nowadays this takes place at a relatively humane distance and the tips are rounded.
