The Baojun 630 is a passenger car model that was jointly developed by General Motors and the Chinese group SAIC and sold under the Baojun brand from 2011 to 2019 .

history

The first vehicle was manufactured on November 22, 2010 at the SGMW plant in Liuzhou . It was officially shown publicly for the first time at Auto Shanghai 2011.

The hatchback version 610 was launched in April 2014. Also in 2014, the Chevrolet Optra, based on the Baojun 630 , arrived in Egypt and Algeria .

From the beginning of 2016, the vehicle was sold with a facelift .

background

The vehicle is the result of a new form of cooperation between domestic and international manufacturers for China. The special thing about it is that a complete vehicle was specially developed for the market there, in contrast to the previous adjustments in this area, which were limited to optical features and equipment. Above all, the decisive factor is a significantly lower price than that of vehicles actually developed for western markets. The Baojun 630 costs 62,800  RMB (about 8300 €) only a little more than half of a similarly sized Chevrolet Cruze J300 (the price starts at 108,900 RMB). As a result, the model should compete directly with models from local manufacturers - for example with the BYD F3 and Great Wall Voleex C30 , which are comparable in size and price and are among the best-selling local models. This strategy is proving to be relatively successful, so that 17,023 Baojun 630 were sold in China in the first two months of 2012, which meant 38th place.

However, this form of cooperation is not without controversy, as the foreign manufacturers only have to use an actually older model - the Baojun 630 is rumored to be based on the Buick Excelle introduced in 2004 , which is based on the Chevrolet Nubira - and equipped it with a more modern body . The Chinese manufacturers cannot learn anything about current vehicle technology from working on such a project; on the other hand, they help the foreign manufacturers to better understand the Chinese design taste and to develop a vehicle that further weakens the Chinese manufacturers, who are already practically only competitive in terms of price.

safety

When in 2012 carried out C-NCAP - Crash Test got the vehicle an overall rating of four stars out of five possible.

The only available engine was a 1.5-liter gasoline engine , which transfers its output, which is a maximum of 82 kW, to the front wheels either via the standard five-speed manual gearbox or the optional six-speed automatic gearbox .
