history

The port of Baratti was the only Etruscan port . The ancient port was located in the central part of the gulf near Casone a few meters north of today's Necropoli di San Cerbone excavation site . The present port was first mentioned on April 23, 1118 as Porto Barattori in a Gherardesca document. The Pisans , who ruled until 1399, built a new pier for the port in 1305. In 1448 Alfons V served as the base for his war activities in the Maremma .

The square tower Torre di Baratti , also called Torre di Porto Baratti , was built in the 15th century as a defense tower on the coast to protect the principality of Piombino from pirates. In 1968 the amphora of Baratti (Anfora di Baratti) was found by fishermen . The silver vessel with 132 images of people from mythology originally comes from Antakya and was made in the 4th century. It is now in the Museo archeologico del territorio di Populonia museum in Piombino.
