Barcarena , officially Portuguese Município de Barcarena , is an industrial city in the north of Brazil in the state of Pará . In 2010 the city had 99,859 inhabitants, who are called Barcarenenses ( barcarenenses ). The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 124,680 inhabitants, who live in a community area of around 1310 km². The distance to the capital Belém is 15 km.

history

The first settlers in today's urban area were Indians from the Amazon region . In 1709 the country was occupied by Jesuits and called Mission Geribirié . In 1758 the village became a parish and known as São Francis Xavier Barcarena under the name of the Jesuit priest .

The town charter and name change in Barcarena was made known by State Law No. 494 of 1897. Since the territorial division in 1960, the city has consisted of two districts: Distrito de Barcarena and Distrito de Murucupi with the settlement of Vila dos Cabanos .

economy

The city is an important industrial center for the processing and export of kaolin , alumina , aluminum and cables for electrical power transmission. The traditional economy is based on agriculture . Barcarena is home to the largest port in the state of Pará, Porto de Vila do Conde , where the logistics company Santos Brasil manages the Tecon Vila do Conde container terminal .

Ship accident in 2015

On October 6, 2015, the animal transporter "MV Haidar" capsized in the port of Vila do Conde as a result of an unsuccessful turning maneuver with 4900 live cattle and almost 700 tons of oil on board. 4,400 cattle drowned, trapped inside the ship. About 500 animals were able to free themselves, but only about 100 survived the accident. Fuel and oil also seeped from the wreck into the water and, as a result of inefficient damage control, contaminated the Pará River and adjacent beaches, depriving many local fishing families of their livelihoods. Because the oil spill was complicated to clean up and no agreement could be reached on who was responsible and how to clean up, hundreds of cattle carcasses rotted on the beach and inside the shipwreck for months, putting an enormous strain on the area's fishing and tourism. The Brazilian Federal Ministry responsible put the damage to the residents at 71 million reais (approx. 20 million euros), of which nothing had been paid out in July 2016.
