Joseph "Joop" Constant Eugène Haex (born November 24, 1911 in Maastricht , Province of Limburg ; † April 14, 2002 in Wassenaar , Province of Zuid-Holland ) was a Dutch lieutenant general of the land forces ( Koninklijke Landmacht ) and politician of the Christelijk-Historische Unie parties (CHU), Democratisch Socialisten '70 and most recently again the CHU, who was, among other things, State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense .

Life

After attending the Hogereburgerschool in 1931, Haex began studying mathematics at a university in the USA , but gave up this study in 1932 and then completed an officer training at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie in Breda by 1935 . After completion of officer training, he was on August 5, 1935 lieutenant and in 1939 to lieutenant promoted. He served in units of the artillery and took part in World War II as such . Haex was a German prisoner of war from 1942 to 1945 .

After his liberation by the Red Army , he was seconded to the headquarters of the General Staff in October 1945 and was then a graduate of the Higher War School ( Hogere Krijgsschool ) in The Hague from 1946 to 1947 . Following a subsequent assignment as chief of staff of a brigade in the Dutch East Indies , Haex was an officer in the headquarters of the general staff between 1948 and April 1, 1951. He was promoted to captain and major in 1952. Between April 1, 1951 and November 1, 1954, he was vice military attaché at the embassy in the USA.

Haex, who was awarded the War Memorial Cross in May 1940 and the Officer's Cross for 25 Years of Service, received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau in December 1952 .

After his return to the Netherlands, Haex was employed as commander of the school for reserve officers of the artillery SROA ( School Reserve Officers of the Artillery ) from November 1, 1954 to 1956, and as such was promoted to lieutenant colonel in October 1955 . He then acted from 1956 to 1957 as head of the operations department of the 5th  division and then until 1960 as head of the department for organization and personnel at the command of the territorial troops NTB ( Nederlandse Territoriaal Bevelhebber ).

Haex, who was promoted to colonel on November 1, 1959 , was head of the Office for Information, Education and Psychological Warfare at the headquarters of the General Staff in 1960 and then from September 16, 1960 to 1962 adviser for public relations to the political leadership in the Ministry of Defense ( Ministerie van Defensie ) before serving as chief of staff of the First Corps until August 1963 .

State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense

Haex, in 1963 a member of the Christian Historical Union (CHU) was issued on 14 August 1963 by Prime Minister Victor Marijnen of State for Affairs of Koninklijke Landmacht of Defense in the government called and held this position until the end of Marijnens term of office on 14 April 1965. Subsequently, from November 16, 1965 to 1967, he was director of the State Artillery Company in Zaandam . In 1965 he was also awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

On April 18, 1967, Haex was reappointed State Secretary for Army Affairs in the Ministry of Defense by the new Prime Minister Piet de Jong and held this office in the De Jong cabinet until July 6, 1971. On July 17, 1971, he was also commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau. In November 1971 he was adopted into retirement and received the titular rank of lieutenant general.

After leaving the CHU in 1971, he became a member of the Democratic Socialists '70, but rejoined the CHU in 1975.
