Bartholomäus van Opstal (* around 1631; † March 7, 1694 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian baroque sculptor .

Life

According to the entry in the marriage book "Bartholomäus de Obsthal Antuerpensis", Bartholomäus van Opstal originally came from Antwerp. He may have been related to the Flemish sculptor Gerard van Opstal . On May 23, 1661, Bartholomäus van Opstal, as a sculptor, sent Johann Georg von Leoprechting, Dean of Berchtesgaden, a proposal for the execution of the high altar of the collegiate church in Berchtesgaden . In 1663 he was called from Rome to build it and then settled in Salzburg. On May 2, 1667, he married Sibylle Eberlin in Salzburg Cathedral. He had eight children with her: Maria Sybilla (born February 1, 1671); Anna Rosina (born February 2, 1671); Catharina Cordula (born April 10, 1673); Franz Ferdinand (born September 8, 1674); Alexander Joseph (born February 29, 1676); Matthias Joseph (born February 15, 1677); Anton Bartholomäus (born May 8, 1679); Anna Elisabeth [Obstaller] (born March 27, 1682).

In Salzburg he obtained the title and rank of high princely valet. He created numerous sculptures in the city of Salzburg. Two of his most important works in Salzburg, the two figures of Bishop Rupert and Bishop Virgil in front of the Salzburg Cathedral, are mostly dated in literature to the year 1660. However, this dating is to be changed to the time after his arrival in Salzburg, and therefore to 1663 at the earliest. He is also named as the master builder of the Allerheiligen monastery in Tittmoning . He died on March 7, 1694 at the age of 63 in Salzburg and was buried in the cemetery of St. Peter.
