Bartold Knaust was already an officer when he became city governor of Hanover on March 13, 1642, and was now the first officer ever in this position. On the other hand, the city rejected the applications from Werner von Mandelsloh , Johann von Holle and Tönnies von Alten , although von Alten had even offered the city to procure two to three flags for defense purposes.

Bartold Knaust initially made a contribution to the repair of the city fortifications of Hanover . After the beginning of the Thirty Years' War he strengthened the already conscripted citizens of the city with a whole company of soldiers, which he increased to around 300 by 1626. But although Tilly had already prepared a siege or occupation of the city in 1625 , the - fortified - city was largely spared by Tilly. The city's chroniclers also attributed this to Knaust's good relationship with Tilly.

Knaust, who also appeared as a good shooter among the citizens, was evidently dissatisfied with the salary . He was deposed in July 1632 and replaced by Caspar von Lüde .

Bartolg Knaust died in Hanover during the war in 1642.

Bartold-Knaust-Strasse

The city commandant was posthumously honored with the naming of Bartold-Knaust-Strasse , which was laid out in the Hanoverian district of Oberricklingen in 1925 .
