The Basilica of St. Teresa ( Spanish Basílica de Santa Teresa ) is a pilgrimage church under construction in Alba de Tormes in the province of Salamanca , Spain . The church of the Diocese of Salamanca is dedicated to St. Teresa of Ávila and is built next to the Carmelite monastery, where she died and was buried in 1582. The title of a minor basilica was given to the original Church of the Holy Sepulcher as early as 1870.

history

The project to build a new church was initiated by Bishop Tomás Cámara with the pastoral letter St. Teresa asks us for a basilica . Construction officially began on May 1, 1898. As a reference to the Middle Ages, Enrique María Repullés y Vargas designed a neo-Gothic church to receive pilgrims to the remains of Santa Teresa de Jesús. The design received international awards, for example in Paris in 1900.

The location of the church was determined by the previous burial site of Teresas, which should be included, and the valley location at Tormes . It was on this difficult site that the foundations of the 100-meter-long and 70-meter-wide church with numerous side chapels, which were to cover 3,100 square meters, began. The side aisles should reach a height of 11 meters, the crossing tower 92 meters. The financing, which was initially considered secure, was quickly consumed by the start-up costs. After a complicated phase of expropriation, the work was carried out at a rapid pace and the outer walls were built. The construction work slowed down between 1904 and 1912, after 20 years and with the First World War , the work was stopped. Between 1927 and 1932, the bishops took on the task of completing the basilica. The inner chapels were built under Bishop Frutos Valiente. In the meantime, Bishop Barbado Viejo entrusted the Carmelites with completing the project. During the Second Republic , the work was permanently interrupted in 1933.

After the fourth Teresian jubilee, a continuation was started again in 1982. In 2007 it was decided to resume work. With the apse and the choir , 1000 square meters of the basilica up to the crossing could be roofed in a new construction. The roof was made of laminated wood, bricks and copper plates. The stained glass windows show a number of clergy women and saints of Christian spirituality: Catherine of Siena , Brigida , Isabel of Portugal , Gertrud von Helfta , Edith Stein , Therese von Lisieux , Rosa von Lima , Juliana von Liège , Clare of Assisi , Hedwig von Andechs and scholastica . In 2010 the project came to a standstill again after the construction phase was completed by the economic crisis. Since then it has been possible to carry out further work step by step.
