Natural Heritage Center Rügen

The Natural Heritage Center Rügen is a nature experience center in Prora on Rügen in the municipality of Binz in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). It opened on June 15, 2013 and offers interactive exhibitions, a treetop path, and guided tours and information on the surrounding ecosystems.

Geographical location

The Heritage Center Ruegen between the Baltic Sea Lagoon Little Jasmund and the Baltic Sea bay Prorer Wiek , a few hundred meters west of the seaside resort Prora on the southwest from there to Karow leading national road  293, and spreads on the northern edge of the ski jump hill ( 60  m above sea level.  NHN ) out.

The adjacent ecosystems of forest, open land and wetlands are designated as DBU natural heritage and are managed by the German Federal Environment Foundation (DBU).

Treetop Walk

A treetop path leads on a total of 650 meters in length at 4 to 17 m above the ground through mixed beech forest and alder quarries. A 40 m high observation tower , modeled on an eagle's nest, stands in the middle of the path; from its viewing platform at a height of 82  m above sea level. NHN offers a panoramic view over the treetops, over parts of Rügen, to the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden and to the Prorer Wieck. Together with the 600 m length of winding path in the tower, the path has a total length of 1250 m.

Exhibitions

A permanent exhibition shows the scenic features of the island of Rügen at 17 stations and offers information on the previous military use of Prora and the DBU natural heritage .

Exhibitions that change every six months complete the offer.

Forest house Prora

The forester's house Prora is located on the site of the nature experience center, which was probably planned and built between 1836 and 1867 and was the seat of the forester of Prince zu Putbus . In the GDR it was used as the seat of the forest administration. It had tenants until 1992, after which it fell into disrepair. The forester's house was completely renovated in 2013.
