The 490 series is an electric multiple unit specially designed for the Hamburg S-Bahn network. In addition to units for the 1200 V direct current network, dual-system vehicles are also procured, which can also run in the long-distance rail network electrified with 15 kV alternating voltage at 16.7 Hz.

history

Planning and manufacturing

As part of the new transport contract of the Hamburg S-Bahn, the trains of the DB class 472 are to be replaced by new vehicles. In June 2013, Bombardier won the tender or received the order to initially manufacture 60 units. In January 2016, S-Bahn board member Kay-Uwe Arnecke visited the production halls of the manufacturer Bombardier in Hennigsdorf near Berlin together with representatives from the press .

Trial run

The pilot series trains have been running through the Hamburg S-Bahn network in trial operation since October 2016.

Passenger service

After successful approval, the trial operation with passengers should start in spring 2018 on all S-Bahn lines. In April 2018, posters depicting the new 490 series and the inscription: “Open the doors soon: Hamburg's newest landmark. The new ET 490 is coming. That's how it works in Hamburg. " Passenger use started with the first two units registered on May 24, 2018.

Since then, most of the new trains have been running on the S21 line. In some cases it is also used on the S3 line. Around 60 units of the new series should be on the road by December 2018. At the beginning of October 2018 it was announced that the delivery of 50 trains will probably be delayed until mid-2019. The vehicles are primarily intended to replace the 472 series on lines S21 and S2.

future

Additional vehicles can be ordered for use on the S21 to Kaltenkirchen, on the S4 to Bad Oldesloe and for the S32 amplifier line.

technology

These are three-part multiple units, the end cars of which each have a driver's cab with crash absorbers. All cars have three entry doors on both sides, the end cars also have one door each on the driver's cab. The intermediate cars and the bogies of the end cars facing the intermediate car are powered. The high-voltage equipment is housed in the intermediate car. The main transformer is located below the floor in two floor pan segments.

The single-arm pantographs for alternating current are arranged on the middle car, the pantographs for direct current on the side of the bogies in the end cars.

The 490 series is the first vehicle on the Hamburg S-Bahn to have air conditioning.

The 490 series also has a modern passenger information system. The next stations and the sights along the route can be seen on four monitors per car. There are new announcements on the trains. At the larger stations, the line and the train destination are announced in German and English both in the vehicle and outside on the platform. Video surveillance is carried out via four cameras per car in the ceiling.

layout

The railcars are painted traffic red, a white decorative stripe on the roof edge and above the floor pan, the passenger doors are set off in white. The window area on the forehead is black, framed by a silver "H" for Hamburg. For the design of the 490 series, the manufacturer Bombardier won the Brandenburg Design Award and the 2015 German Design Award.
