The steam locomotives of the class S 3/5 of the Bavarian State Railways were express locomotives with a 2'C wheel arrangement.

Wet steam version

Between 1903 and 1907 Maffei delivered three series with a total of 39 locomotives. They had a four-cylinder composite wet steam engine. In contrast to the previous CV design , the von Borries engine design was chosen ; the internal high-pressure cylinders and the external low-pressure cylinders were therefore in a transverse plane and worked on the first coupling axis .

From the second series (built in 1904) the boiler pressure of the S 3/5 was increased from 14 to 16 bar. The pipe length and the diameter of the inner cylinder were also changed.

The S 3/5 from 1904 onwards was technically closely related to the S 2/5 developed in parallel . Both types differed only in so far as it was due to the different wheel alignment and the larger coupling wheel diameter of the S 2/5; in particular, the boiler and engine were the same, and so was the performance. The maximum permissible speed was also the same for both types (110 km / h). The S 3/5 N were clearly superior to the S 2/5 in terms of power and tractive power (300 t at 100 km / h), as the locomotives had three coupling axles. The S 3/5 were stationed in the Munich I and Nuremberg workshops .

The locomotives were with a Tender respondents to type bay 2'2 'T 21 and bay 2'2' T 21.8 equipped.

different tech. Data

For the Bavarian anniversary national exhibition in 1906 in Nuremberg, Maffei equipped the locomotive with track number 3329 with a Schmidt- type smoke tube superheater on a trial basis . In addition, the diameter of the cylinders has been increased to 360/590 mm. These measures resulted in a significant increase in the locomotive performance (450 t on the level with 100 km / h), so that from 1908 only superheated steam S 3/5 were procured from the Bavarian State Railways.

Although the more powerful S 3/6 express locomotive had already been available since 1908 , the number of S 3/5 Hs rose to 30 by 1911, partly because the financial resources available were not available to purchase the more expensive S 3/6 sufficient. A total of 69 S 3/5 were made.

German Reichsbahn

After the First World War , 19 wet steam and six superheated steam locomotives had to be surrendered. Of these, 17 machines went to the French Eastern Railway , five to the AL and two to the Belgian state railway Etat Belge. The locomotive with the road number 3333 remained in Poland after the end of the war and was classified by the PKP under the number Ok103-1.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over the remaining 20 wet steam engines as class 17.4 with the road numbers 17 401-420 and had them converted to superheated steam in 1924/25. The existing 24 superheated steam machines became the 17.5 series and were given the numbers 17 501-524. Since there were enough modern express locomotives, the S 3/5 were mainly used in the passenger train service of the Reichsbahn divisions Augsburg and Nuremberg .

The Reichsbahn began retiring the S 3/5 as early as 1932. First of all, the older, former wet steam locomotives disappeared, of which eight were still available at the beginning of the Second World War , while at the same time 21 former S 3/5 H were still in service. At the end of the war, all of the machines were still fully available in Bavaria, but, now heavily worn, they were no longer in regular operation. Both variants were finally phased out by 1948.
