history

Before Be'er Oras, whose name is made up of “Brunnen” and the neighboring mountain and stream “Ora”, was the first source of fresh water to be supplied to Eilat, before it was connected to the national water network. The Ministry of Agriculture founded the well in 1949 (בְּאֵר Bə'er ) in the Aravah a farm for the research and development of agriculture in arid climates. On a website of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev it can be read that the “climatic conditions in Be'er-Ora [..] are among the most difficult in Israel, especially in summer: the daily maximum temperatures are on average almost 40 ° C, the relative humidity drops to 20-25% at noon. The sun's intensity on a horizontal surface in Be'er-Ora is close to 1 kW / m² in midsummer, which is one of the highest intensities in the world. "

David Ben-Gurion visits the Gadna camp in Be'er Ora (1957)

The Israel Defense Forces established the first Gadna training camp in Be'er Ora in 1950 . This Gadna camp was in operation until the early 1990s. In David Grossman's novel A Horse Comes to the Bar , the Gadna Camp Be'er Ora plays a central role - looking back at the mid-1950s.

On March 18, 1968, an Israeli school bus was blown up by a mine in a Fatah attack near Be'er Ora. Two adults were killed and ten children were injured.

In cooperation with the Jewish National Fund (JNF), a new JNF-GADNA youth village was to be built on its premises , for which the Ben-Gurion University had plans .

“The program for the camp provides for the accommodation of 400 young people and 100 employees. The youths are expected to spend about a week in the camp where the GADNA trainees undergo pre-military training, and the JNF trainees - from Israel and abroad - are introduced to the advances and successes of Israeli desert development. The camp will consist of 15 to 20 buildings, including student dormitories, a dining room and separate cafeteria, a meeting hall and synagogue, an administration building, a medical clinic, staff accommodation, training and sports areas and a swimming pool. The design of the warehouse, from the design to the design of the individual buildings, thermal comfort should be achieved with the least amount of energy. To this end, buildings will rely on passive energy for winter heating and natural cooling methods in summer. The design of the connected outdoor areas and pedestrian paths aims to improve the thermal conditions there too. "

It cannot be determined whether these plans were implemented and whether they were related to the demolition work in 2011, during which historic camp buildings - with the exception of the bunker, the swimming pool and the well - fell victim to an asbestos removal project.

In 2001 the new Be'er Ora was built as a housing estate next to the abandoned camp. They are supposed to revive the Arava and bring more people from central Israel to the Negev .

On December 4, 2014, one of the worst environmental disasters in Israeli history occurred near Be'er Ora. During the maintenance, the Trans-Israel oil pipeline was damaged and 600,000 gallons of crude oil spilled, causing respiratory illness in local residents, contaminating the environment and threatening wildlife.

aviation

In 2004 the government decided to move Eilat Airport to an open area near Be'er Ora. This decision was made because Eilat Airport was very close to residential and commercial areas. The new Ramon Airport officially opened on January 21, 2019; it is “the best secured airport in the country. The highest fence in the world (six meters) against anti-tank shells, highly developed security cameras and radar equipment are supposed to ensure that nothing is left to chance at Ramon Airport. The fence will measure 34 kilometers. ”The new airport is also of great strategic importance:

“The airport also offers an alternative in possible times of crisis: It was built in such a way that it is possible to pick up any aircraft diverted from Ben Gurion - a lesson from the Gaza war in 2014. At that time, the air traffic of foreign providers was out of fear of Palestinian missiles temporarily discontinued. Israel also fears an attack by the Lebanese Hezbollah on the "Ben Gurion" airport.
