Bechet is a small town in Dolj County in Little Wallachia in Romania .

location

Bechet is located in the west of the Wallachian Plain , about 4 km north of the Danube - opposite the Bulgarian city ​​of Orjachowo - and 11 km east of the confluence of the Jiu ( Schil ) into the Danube . The district capital Craiova is about 60 km north.

history

The long agricultural place was suitable as a starting point for crossing the Danube by boats and ferries and therefore had economic and military strategic importance. In 1877, during the Romanian War of Independence , Bechet was the scene of fighting between Romanian and Russian troops on one side and Turkish units on the other.

In 2004, Bechet was declared a city. The most important employment opportunities for the residents are the Danube port, trade in border traffic with Bulgaria, agriculture and fishing.

population

1930 lived in Bechet about 2350 inhabitants. In the 2002 census, 3864 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 3675 Romanians and 187 Roma .

Bechet has no rail connection. At the height of the city there is a Danube port, which is particularly important for ferry connections to Bulgaria. There is regular bus service to Corabia . The city is the starting point for the national roads ( drum național ) DN 54A to Corabia, DN 55 to Craiova and DN 55A to Calafat .
