The Beek is a right tributary of the Hamme in the Teufelsmoor in Lower Saxony with a very light current and flows between Melchers Hütte and Neu Helgoland . The source of the main inflow is in Bornzeile in the municipality of Vollersode at a height of 7 m above sea level. NN . From there, the Beek flows through the village of Verlüßmoor and only becomes accessible for canoes at the road bridge of the L153 in the village of Teufelsmoor, as a bird nature reserve was set up beforehand from 2017, which is now prohibited all year round. At the bridge of the L153, the Beek is 1.4 m above sea level. NN .
The last two kilometers of the Beek - from the broad water nature park to the mouth - are the last near-natural river course of the Hammeniederung; wide bulges distinguish the Beek from other straightened rivers.
The area is very suitable for bird watching: herons and lapwing are not uncommon, but cranes , curlews and other rare species can also be found here. From Bargschütt (about 5.4 km before the estuary) you can take walks in the nature reserve Peat Canal and Randmoore .
Information on the ecology of the river can be obtained from the Osterholz Biological Station (BIOS) in Osterholz-Scharmbeck . It is closed to water sports enthusiasts and water hikers from October 16 to April 30, as the Beek is a popular winter resting place for migratory birds . The broad water nature reserve is closed all year round.
