A certificate is a document that contains information about a person or other facts . It is mostly issued by authorities as an official certificate , notaries , associations or employers .

etymology

The certificate or Attestation as a general "by appearances validly testified confirmation of certain facts" can be found as early as the late Middle Ages in the increasingly German firm language . The German legal dictionary DRW lists, for example, “he certifies his not dan as right” dated 1337, “whom solckes ... is certified and proven” after 1517, “his innocence ... has not been proven nor brought about”. 1559 was written “probation and certification” and Grimm's German dictionary also fixed the word in Latin probatio, firmatio .

In the 17th century it was already shown as an official document in the sense of a " proving document", such as "enter the certificate, including the witness name at court" in the Corpus Iuris Cambialis of Johann Gottlieb Siegel 1682, or "here there is no proper evidence, only a certificate is required ”from Hans Jacob Leu : Eydgenößisches Stadt- und Land-Recht from 1746.

The Brothers Grimm still lead to 1,854 Attestation as the primary form. The word form is also certificated or certified .
