Würzburg: Even though he is still a student, Leopold wants to marry blonde Kathrein, the landlady of the Golden Goose. To dissuade Leopold from his idea, Minna, Kathrein's aunt, writes a letter to Valentin, the boy's father. When they arrive, Leopold's parents find out that Kathrein really loves Stefan, the inn's cellar master. In the meantime, Stefan has heard of Leopold's marriage to Kathrein, which arouses jealousy and disappointment in him. He decides to quit his job with the Golden Gans. Leopold realizes that Kathrein doesn't love him and releases her.
