Bellaphon records is a German major label founded on November 25, 1963 by Branko (Branislav) Zivanovic and based in Frankfurt am Main.
history
With his wife Jutta Riedel, who ran a record store in Frankfurt, Branko Zivanovic founded the record label Bellaphon in Frankfurt. Branko Zivanovic was a qualified mechanical engineer and came to Germany from Belgrade in 1956 as a political refugee . Zivanovic earned the start-up capital for founding his own record company as a car washer. The basic color of all labels was a certain shade of purple . The company became successful when it took over the then unknown label Fantasy and was able to bring all the records of the Creedence Clearwater Revival onto the market in Germany . At times they had numerous labels under contract, such as Penny Farthing , Deutsche Vogue , Milestone Records , Barclay Records and the like. a. Sales were increased with supply contracts for the PX markets of the US armed forces in Germany. The record company grew from originally 20 employees to 105 employees within five years, and the label also increased its annual turnover from three to 30 million Deutschmarks .
In 1976 Bellaphon took over the distribution of the records from Casablanca Records and thus also from the Kiss group in Germany. Bellaphon thus guaranteed the release of the albums at almost the same time as they were released in the USA . Bellaphon kept the distribution of these albums until 1981.
The label Bacillus Records , which was founded by the producer Peter Hauke and brought groups such as Nektar , Omega , Karthago , Steamhammer and Wolfgang Ambros to the West German market, became known. All sound carriers were pressed in the press shop Taunus-Ton-Technik (TTT). Music cassettes were also made there later. A subsidiary was founded in Austria that successfully marketed folk music. After Branko Zivanovic's death, his wife continued the business.
Labels and sub-labels
The company sells sound carriers under the Bellaphon , Bacillus and L&R labels . The labels sold by Bellaphon include 2entertain, Sun Entertainment , Metal Enterprises , Hot Records, Rolled Gold, Jazzmen, Plaza Records and Premium Musik. In 1980 Bellaphon took over the marketing of the products of the US label Boardwalk in Germany, Great Britain, Austria and Switzerland until it went bankrupt in 1983 .
Genres and artists
Bellaphon markets artists from the fields of Schlager , Jazz , Rock and Pop Music , Reggae and Dancehall , Punk , Metal and World Music . These include artists such as Flippers , The Amigos , Wolfgang Ambros , Franz Lambert , Nektar , Loveland , Papa Wemba , Black Angels , Heroes of Yesterday , Superfluous , Hills of Kings and Mit Ohne Strom . In the course of re-releases, albums by artists such as Edith Piaf , Bob Marley , Johnny Cash , Stevie Wonder , Michael Jackson , Diana Ross , Creedence Clearwater Revival , John Fogerty , Neil Diamond are distributed. From 1991 to 1993 the Böhsen Onkelz were under contract with Bellaphon. In his autobiography, published by Hannibal Verlag in November 2019, Matthias "Gonzo" Röhr , the guitarist of the Böhsen Onkelz, writes about Bellaphon owner Branko Zivanovic: “ An impressive success story, which was also based on the fact that Zivanovic never asked himself about preferences and personal taste, but always marketed musically what could be best sold.
