Ben Barzman

Ben Barzman (born October 19, 1911 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , † December 15, 1989 in Santa Monica , California , United States ) was an American screenwriter .

Life

Ben Barzman began writing the film You're a Lucky Fellow in 1943 , Mr. Smith with his work as a screenwriter and wrote the scripts for around 25 films over the next thirty years.

He also wrote the script for the film Stahlgewitter (1945) and was married to Norma Barzman, who also worked as a screenwriter. When they end the 1940 year as Communists suspected and on the blacklist were set, they were unable to practice their profession in the United States. They moved to Europe in 1949 , where Ben Barzman worked in the film industry and made the acquaintance of Vittorio De Sica , Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers . In 1957, his son, later director Paolo Barzman , was born in Cannes .

He wrote the scripts for several of Joseph Losey's films . At Giacomo , both used the name of the Italian director Andrea Forzano as a pseudonym .

The works that served as a template for his scripts include the novel Christ in Concrete by Pietro di Donato ( Give Us This Day by Edward Dmytryk ), the novel Christ is crucified again and again by Nikos Kazantzakis ( Celui qui doit mourir by Jules Dassin ), the drama Someone waiting by Emlyn Williams ( Time Without Pity by Joseph Losey) and the drama The Visit of the Old Lady by Friedrich Dürrenmatt ( The Visit by Bernhard Wicki ). While in the Hollywood film industry , he also worked with film directors John Guillermin and Anthony Mann .

His work on the screenplay of El Cid (1961) was not mentioned in the film credits because of his professional ban in Hollywood. He later wrote the scripts for the films The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), Keyword “Heavy Water” (1965), The Blue Max (1966).

Barzman did not return to Hollywood until 1977 after the end of his professional career.
