Benedikt Schubiger

Benedikt Schubiger (born November 9, 1801 in Uznach ; † October 27, 1859 in Zurich ) was a Swiss politician and businessman . From 1851 until his death he was a member of the National Council.

biography

Schubiger was the son of a landlord and butcher. He attended the Latin school in Uznach , later a high school in Besançon . He then worked as the secretary of the district governor of the lake district . He was also a postman and innkeeper. As the owner of the monopoly on the mining and trading of shale coal in Gommiswald , he became very wealthy. In Uznach he made extensive property purchases. Among other things, in 1844 he auctioned the shell of the Posthotel “Linthof”. He had the building completed and extensive stables built. Until the opening of the Rapperswil – Ziegelbrücke railway line in 1859, the “Linthof” was an important stage on the route between Zurich and Chur . Schubiger was also a co-founder of the textile dyeing company Rotfarb and the savings and lending bank of the lake district .

At the communal level, Schubiger was active as president of the citizenship from 1835, from 1849 to 1851 as president of the local parish and from 1849 of the Catholic parish. He was also chairman of the lower court of the lake district and from 1856 assisted the Berg Sion monastery . He represented liberal political views and was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of St. Gallen in 1837 , to which he belonged initially until 1839 and again from 1853 to 1857. In particular, he campaigned for road construction and a mixed- denominational canton school . Schubiger ran successfully in the National Council elections in 1851 and then represented the constituency of St. Gallen-West until his death .
