Benedikt von Peter (born April 20, 1977 in Cologne ) is a German director .

Life

Benedikt von Peter grew up near Cologne. He studied musicology, German, law and singing in Bonn and Berlin, where he and fellow students initiated the Akademie Musiktheater Berlin-Salzburg (now Akademie Musiktheater, now part of the Deutsche Bank Foundation ). During his studies he founded a free music theater group together with the dramaturge Benjamin von Blomberg .

In 2003, Peter went to the Hamburg State Opera as an assistant , where he staged the German premiere of Péter Eötvös ' Angels in America . In the following years he assisted a. a. Peter Konwitschny , Peter Mussbach , Luca Ronconi and Christof Loy , whose director he became. This was followed by his own productions at the Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin and at the opera houses in Heidelberg , Frankfurt , Basel , Hanover and at the Komische Oper Berlin . At the Hanover State Opera he staged La Traviata with Nicole Chevalier in the leading role and Luigi Nono's Intolleranza in 1960 , for which he was awarded the German Theater Prize DER FAUST for best director in the music theater category in 2011 .

From 2006 to 2009 Peter was a substitute professor for directing at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts , where he initiated and supported various projects with the Heidelberg Theater, the Frankfurt Theater and the Thalia Theater Hamburg .

From the 2012/2013 season to 2014/2015, Peter managed the opera division at Theater Bremen and was in-house director there. He was awarded the Kurt Hübner Prize in 2015 for his directorial work and the opera program in Bremen . In November 2014 he was appointed artistic director of the Lucerne Theater . 2016/2017 was his first season in Lucerne. In August 2018 he announced that he would be moving to Theater Basel for the 2020/2021 season .

With Les robots ne conaissent pas le blues or Die Entführung aus dem Serail , his last directorial work in Bremen, Peter and the performance group Gintersdorfer / Klaßen were invited to Kampnagel Hamburg and the Wiener Festwochen in 2016/2017 .
