Benjamin ("Ben") Thomsen (born August 25, 1987 in Invermere , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ski racer . He has competed in the World Cup since 2010 and is particularly successful in the fast downhill and Super-G disciplines .

biography

Thomsen grew up in Invermere and learned to ski at the age of three and took part in races for the first time when he was five. His mother ran the local ski school while his father coached the British Columbia's youth selection. In December 2012 he began to participate in FIS races ; but it took more than two years before he made it into the top ten for the first time. His first victory in an FIS race was finally in December 2007. Thomsen started in the Nor-Am Cup for the first time in December 2004, but here too he initially did not achieve any results worth mentioning. It was not until the 2006/07 season that he was able to score several times. He also started at the Junior World Championships 2007 in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee . Since sufficient results in the Nor-Am Cup continued to fail, he had to leave the provincial selection. In order to continue to finance training and travel to the races, he worked, among other things, as a gardener and construction worker.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , Thomsen was used as a forerunner and was then given the opportunity to take part in World Cup races . He had his world ucp debut on March 6, 2010 in Kvitfjell , where he finished 43rd in the downhill. In the following season 2010/2011 he started regularly in the World Cup. He received financial support from the sponsors of Manuel Osborne-Paradis . Shortly after Thomsen had made his first podium in the Nor-Am Cup, he won his first World Cup points on December 18, 2010 when he achieved 16th place in the downhill with start number 58 on the Saslong in Val Gardena . He also took part in the 2011 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was then accepted into the national team.

On February 4, 2012, Thomsen with starting number 50 reached fifth place in the downhill from Chamonix and thus his first top 10 result in the World Cup. A week later he finished in second place at the final Olympic rehearsal in Krasnaya Polyana near Sochi , which was the same as his first (and so far only) World Cup podium. As a result, however, Thomsen was unable to build on these achievements: In the 2012/13 season he only scored six times in the points, and only twice in the 2013/14 season. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he finished 19th in the downhill.

After almost three years, Thomsen achieved another top 10 result in February 2015, as well as in December of the same year. Due to knee problems, he missed most of the 2016/17 season and had to undergo an operation. With four results in the points, he qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , where he finished 28th in the downhill. Compared to previous years, his performance improved significantly in winter 2018/19: he managed to rank among the top ten in the World Cup three times. Furthermore, his seventh place in the downhill from Åre is the best result so far in a world championship.
