Horatio Benedict "Bennie" Blades Sr. (* 3. September 1966 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida ) is a former American American football poker players to position the Safties . He played for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL) for nine years . He also played for the Seattle Seahawks for a year before retiring .

Early years

Blades went to high school in Sunrise , Florida . He later played college football for the University of Florida . Here he received the Jim Thorpe Award in 1987.

NFL

Blades was selected third in the first round in the 1988 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions . He was immediately a permanent member of the Lions. In his first season he caught two interceptions . After the 1991 season he was elected to the Pro Bowl . For the 1997 season he moved to the Seattle Seahawks and ended his career there after a year.

Personal

Blade's nephew, Horatio Benedict Blades Jr. , played for the Washington Redskins as a linebacker in the NFL from 2007 to 2010 .

His brother Al Blades (1977-2003) played college football for the University of Miami from 1996 to 2000 and was under contract with the San Francisco 49ers for two years .

His older brother Brian Blades played for the Seattle Seahawks as a wide receiver in the NFL for eleven years .
