Benno Runnebaum

Benno Runnebaum (* 1933 in Rüschendorf (Damme) ) is a German gynecologist , obstetrician and reproductive medicine specialist .

Live and act

Benno Runnebaum was born in Rüschendorf, a district of Damme in Lower Saxony . He completed his medical studies at the Universities of Münster , Bonn and Cologne . He received his doctorate in Cologne in 1962 with the grade summa cum laude . He then spent a year at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City , where he researched steroid hormones . After his return from the USA , he worked as a doctor and scientist at the University Women's Clinic of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1964 . Here he completed his specialist training under Josef Zander in 1969 and completed his habilitation with a thesis entitled "Identification and quantitative determination of progesterone, 20a-dihydroprogesterone in the human uterine muscle during pregnancy". In 1970 Runnebaum followed his teacher Zander to Munich to the gynecological clinic on Maistraße at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . There he was appointed senior physician and private lecturer . As early as 1971 he moved back to Heidelberg University and became head of the department for gynecological endocrinology . In 1973 he was appointed professor and in 1975 medical director of the Department of Gynecological Endocrinology and Fertility Disorders. He headed the department until his retirement in 1998. Since then he has been running a private practice in Heidelberg .

With his wife Hedwig and son Ingo B. Runnebaum , he founded the Runnebaum Foundation in 2008 , which is dedicated to the targeted and individual promotion of talented female academics in the fields of medicine and natural sciences to improve equal opportunities in Germany.

Benno Runnebaum published more than 450 original scientific papers. He has published a total of twelve books and contributed 87 book chapters.
