Benno von Holwede

Benno von Holwede (born February 5, 1850 in Braunschweig ; † October 31, 1924 there ) was a German medic . From 1895 to 1924 he was director of the Braunschweig Municipal Nursing and Hospital, which was later named after him.

life and work

Holwede was born as the son of a captain in the Braunschweigischen Jägerbataillon . The house where he was born stood at Ruhfäutchenplatz in Braunschweig. His maternal grandfather was Lieutenant Colonel Metzner, who had taken part in the battle of Quatre-Bras under Duke Friedrich Wilhelm . Holwede attended the Martino-Katharineum high school in his home town until 1870 and then studied medicine in Würzburg , Marburg , Leipzig and Tübingen . He completed his studies in Würzburg in February 1875 with the state examination. After six months of military service in Göttingen, he moved to the University of Tübingen as an assistant doctor. He did the second half of military service in Jena in the winter of 1876/77 and then settled as a general practitioner in Braunschweig. He entered the city service in 1878. Until 1895, Holwede worked at the municipal nursing and hospital under Sanitary Counselor Franz Prael, after whose death he held the position of chief doctor until April 1, 1924. He also worked as a town doctor, school doctor and upper arm doctor. In his private life he devoted himself to butterfly studies , where he found recognition as a researcher.

Expansion of the municipal hospital

Holwede's main areas of work were surgery and paediatrics , a subject that had only been academically established in Germany since 1895. In 1897 he set up an exemplary children's department in the municipal hospital, which later became the children's clinic.

Honors

Holwede was in 1900 the title of Medical Council of awarded and 1915 a secret Medical Council. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the Medical Association and the Association for Health Care made him an honorary member. He was also awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Henry the Lion and the Braunschweig War Merit Cross. The Pflegehausstraße in Braunschweig, the connecting road between Königstieg and Chemnitzstraße, was renamed Holwedestraße in 1929 .
