Benzo [ ghi ] perylene is a chemical compound from the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and contains six linked six-membered rings.

Occurrence

Benzo [ ghi ] perylene occurs naturally in crude oil and is ubiquitous in coal tar and as a product of incomplete combustion. It is found, for example, in cigarette smoke , automobile and industrial exhaust fumes, grilled meat products and cooking oils, as well as in soil, groundwater and surface water.

In the atmosphere , benzo [ ghi ] perylene is bound to particles and reaches soil and water via wet and dry deposition, where it is only slowly broken down when bound to particles.

properties

Benzo [ ghi ] perylene is a flammable yellow solid that is practically insoluble in water.

use

Benzo [ ghi ] perylene is used in small quantities for scientific purposes and for the manufacture of dyes, pesticides and other chemical compounds.

safety instructions

The bioaccumulation potential of benzo [ ghi ] perylene is high. It is also suspected of being mutagenic . Toxicity and carcinogenicity cannot be classified due to a lack of data. However, there is evidence of carcinogenicity. Benzo [ ghi ] perylene is one of 16 PAHs that have been included in the list of priority pollutants (EPA list) by the US EPA and is on the EU list of PAHs whose investigation is recommended.
