Gagnepain's barberry ( Berberis gagnepainii ) is a species of plant from the genus of barberries ( Berberis ) in the family of the barberry family (Berberidaceae) originating from China . The author Camillo Karl Schneider , who first described this species, named it in honor of the French botanist in Paris François Gagnepain (1866–1952).

Gagnepain's barberry is native to western China . It was introduced in Europe in 1904 by Ernest Henry Wilson , who collected plants for Veitch and Sons in western and central China from 1899 to 1905 .
description
Gagnepain's barberry is a small, dense, evergreen shrub with upright branches. The numerous foliage leaves are studded with many spines on the leaf edge, narrow and up to 10 cm long, their edges bent over wavy. The upper side of the leaf is dull green, the underside glossy green. The leaf spines are tripartite and up to 2 cm long. Six to twelve of the yellow flowers are in clusters. The berries are frosted with black and blue.

Like many other barberries, this species is used as an ornamental shrub. Due to its growth, it is suitable for impenetrable hedges.
