Berensberg is a district of Kohlscheid , city of Herzogenrath , in the city ​​region of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Berensberg is located in the very south of the city and borders in the south and west on the Aachen districts of Soers and Richterich and in the north on Rumpen . The L 244 runs through the village .

General

Berensberg is a rural village and is surrounded by meadows. The cath. Filialkirche St. Matthias goes back to a foundation of the knight Matthias von Berensberg, who donated the building of a chapel in 1381 . Today's church is a neo-Romanesque building from 1889/90.

Next to the church is Berensberg Castle and on the eastern edge of the village is the Berger Busch forest area , which belonged to the former Trappist monastery of Mont Sion , which Napoléon dissolved in 1802 . His sister Pauline Bonaparte spent a large part of her free time there, which is why Napoléon had the obelisk, now known as the Blue Stone , built on a neighboring viewing platform for her sake in 1812 . The Berger Busch was later named Paulinenwäldchen in memory of Napoleon's sister . At the beginning of the Prussian era, a restaurant that still exists today was built there, which served as a hunting lodge when the Cockerill family was at Berensberg Castle.
