The Dortmunder Bergmann Brewery is a brewery in Dortmund .

Historical origins

The brewery was founded in 1796 by Wilhelm Dietrich Johann Bergmann in the Rahm district of Dortmund . In 1966 it had 109 employees and produced 96,000 hectoliters of beer. The brewery was taken over by the Dortmund Ritter Brewery in 1971 and closed in 1972 as an independent brewery at Rahmer Straße 262. At the place of the brewery there is now a supermarket, which reminds of the historical place through photos inside. The former brewery cellar, on which the supermarket stands, is still there today, but not open to the public. The legal successors held the trademark rights until 2003.

founding

In 2005, the previously abandoned trademark rights to the name Dortmunder Bergmann Bier were acquired by Dortmund microbiologist Thomas Raphael for 300 euros after he accidentally saw in an online trademark database that the "Bergmann" brand stood for the former brewery in Dortmund-Rahm was no longer taken. Raphael then reactivated the Bergmann brand in order to keep the trademark rights. After he distributed the first bottles of export beer at a party in 2007 at which a journalist from Dortmund was present, a large article appeared in a Saturday edition of the Ruhr Nachrichten . Due to the extremely positive response from many Dortmunders afterwards, Raphael felt encouraged to expand his brewing activities. Initially, the export, specialty, pils and black beer varieties were brewed in the Bosch brewery . Since then he has been running the new company with his business partner Herbert Prigge. The expansion was initially financed by issuing 30 profit participation certificates with a total value of 210,000 euros, which bear four percent interest.

At the end of 2008, the company moved into its own brewery in the Dortmund harbor, where craft beer specialties were brewed from the completion in April 2010 (see below). Since 2017, a new brewery has been in operation in the Phoenix West industrial estate in the Hörde district of Dortmund with a capacity of 5,000 hectoliters , in which all types of beer are produced.

The Bergmann Brewery's slogan is "Hard work. Honest wages."

distribution

Bergmann beers are sold through local retailers within a maximum radius of 30 kilometers from Dortmund. In addition, a drinking hall is operated at a former bus stop from the 1950s on the central Hohen Wall in downtown Dortmund. Some restaurants in the region also offer these types of beer.

Connected to the brewery, which has been in existence since 2017, is a standing beer hall , in which the brewery's beers can be tasted and purchased. Seasonal specialties are also available for consumption.

Development of sales figures

In 2010, 1,000 hectoliters of beer were brewed for the first time, and a year later 2,000 hectoliters. In 2015 the output was 3,000 hectoliters, in 2016 it was 4,000 hectoliters. In the summer of 2018, emissions were already 80 percent above the previous year's figure.
