life and career
Thurnheer's father comes from Thurgau , his mother from Vaud . He studied law at the University of Zurich and graduated in 1973 with a degree ( magna cum laude ). In the same year he was discovered and employed among 1,600 competitors at a young talent competition for sports reporters by radio and television DRS. After working primarily as a radio presenter, he appeared on television for the first time in 1975, as a presenter for the program Sportkalender . Over time, he took over the presentation of almost all sports programs on Swiss television such as sports on weekends ,Sports panorama and current sports . As a live commentator, he specialized in football and ice hockey . From 1980 to 1991 he hosted the quiz program Tell-Star and from 1992 to 2012 the entertainment program Benissimo . He has been awarded the Prix Walo four times. In 2002 he made his debut as a book author with Reden ist nach Silber , a collection of short stories and anecdotes from his professional and private life. In 2011 the TV casting show One like Beni Thurnheer, specially designed for Bernard Thurnheer, ran. Thurnheer was the namesake and jury member of the show, whichhelped Swiss sports television (SSF) to engage and develop a young talent as a sports commentator.
As an eloquent moderator and commentator with an unrestrained flow of speech, Thurnheer is also referred to as the “Schnurri der Nation”, as well as with the addition “national” that is customary among particularly well-known, deserved or popular Swiss people: “Beni national”. In his live comments, he made a name for himself with his meticulous factual knowledge and his original games of thought and words. Two examples:
- "In a flock of black sheep, the white sheep is the black sheep." (alluding to the only white soccer player from Trinidad & Tobago )
- "Now a doctor has to be here, a handicraft teacher is no longer enough!" (after the head injury of the Swiss Senderos at the 2006 World Cup )
Thurnheer is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pestalozzi Children's Foundation . He lives in Seuzach and speaks fluent German, French, Italian and English. He is divorced, in a relationship and has two sons, Thomas and Peter.

Individual evidence
- ↑ The umbrella association of Swiss teachers found that Thurnheer had violated the dignity of an entire profession with this slogan.
