Bernard V. Bothmer

Bernard V. Bothmer , actually Bernhard Wilhelm von Bothmer (born October 13, 1912 in Charlottenburg , † November 24, 1993 in New York ) was a German-American Egyptologist .

Bothmer was the son of the royal Prussian Colonel Wilhelm von Bothmer (1869-1922) and Marie Freiin von und zu Egloffstein (1887-1960). He married the translator Geraldine (Gerry) Samuelson (born February 8, 1922 in New York) in his first marriage on October 18, 1951 in New York . That marriage ended in divorce in 1981. In his second marriage, he married on October 15, 1982 in New York Norma-Jean Koplin (born September 18, 1934 in Chicago , Illinois , USA), daughter of Harry Koplin and Hannah Libman. His younger brother was the classical archaeologist Dietrich von Bothmer . Both were from Ernst Morwitz in 1927 in the George districthas been introduced. Both maintained contact even after the poet's death.

Bothmer studied Egyptology at the Universities of Berlin and Bonn . He had been working at the Egyptian Museum in Berlin since 1932 . In 1938 he emigrated to the USA out of anti-National Socialist convictions. From 1956 he worked at the Brooklyn Museum , from 1963 as curator of the Egyptian Department. Since 1960 he was also professor of Egyptology at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. His scientific specialty was the sculpture of the Egyptian late period.
