Bernd Bonwetsch

Bernd Bonwetsch (born October 17, 1940 in Berlin ; † October 13, 2017 in Ebeltoft ) was a German historian . Bonwetsch was founding director in 2003 and director of the German Historical Institute in Moscow until 2009 . He was an expert on the history of the Soviet Union and German-Soviet relations.

Life

Bernd Bonwetsch studied history , Slavic studies and comparative education in Hamburg and at the Free University of Berlin from 1962 to 1967 . In 1968/69 he studied at Stanford University in the USA , which was followed by archival studies. His doctorate followed in 1972 at the historical seminar in Hamburg. From 1973 to 1980 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Eastern European History and Regional Studies at the University of Tübingen . Bonwetsch taught from 1980 to 2003 as a professor for Eastern European history at the Ruhr University in Bochum . This teaching activity was only interrupted by stays abroad in 1992 and 1993. In 1992 he went to the University of Innsbruck as a visiting professor and in 1993 to the State University of Kemerowo . In 2000 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Kemerovo State University and in 2004 he received another honorary doctorate from the Karasin National University of Kharkiv . His research focus was the history of the National Socialist and Stalinist tyranny.
