Bernd von Brauchitsch (born September 30, 1911 in Berlin ; † December 19, 1974 ) was a German officer in the Reichswehr and Wehrmacht . It was during the Second World War, a long time aide of Hermann Goering .

Life

Bernd von Brauchitsch was born as the eldest son of the later Commander-in-Chief of the Army and General Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch and his first wife Elisabeth, née von Karstedt.

In 1931 he entered the German Aviation School in Munich, where he acquired his pilot's license. In 1932 von Brauchitsch joined a cavalry regiment of the Reichswehr and was promoted to lieutenant in 1934 . In the same year he joined the Air Force . He served first as a pilot at the test site in Rechlin , then in 1935 as a technical officer in a Stuka squadron . In 1936 he was promoted to first lieutenant and transferred to a Stuka group in Lübeck , and in December of the same year he was promoted to squadron captain of a Stuka squadron. In 1939 he attended the Higher Air Force School in Gatow and took part in the Air War Academy . Also in 1939 he was employed as an adjutant to the Commander in Chief of the Air Force. In October he was promoted to captain . From May to August 1940 he was employed as a group commander in the IV. Group of Lehrgeschwader 1 in the western campaign and the Battle of Britain . From August he was again adjutant to the mayor of the Air Force. In 1941 he was accepted into the General Staff and at the end of 1941 he was appointed Chief Adjudant to the Commander in Chief of the Air Force. In 1942 he was promoted to major , in 1943 to lieutenant colonel and in 1944 to colonel . In 1944 he was awarded the pilot and observer badge in gold with diamonds by Göring . At the end of April 1945, he and Göring were arrested by the SS in Berchtesgaden , which had orders to shoot Göring, his family and close associates after the surrender of Berlin . However, this order was not carried out by the guards.

In May 1945, von Brauchitsch contacted the 36th US Division of the 7th American Army on Göring's behalf to start negotiations as a negotiator. As Göring's agent, he informed him that Göring considered the war to be over and was ready to surrender. Subsequently, von Brauchitsch by the Allies in captivity taken, from which he was released to the 1948th On March 12, 1946, he was questioned as a witness in the Nuremberg trial of the major war criminals .

post war period

In the post-war period, von Brauchitsch was the manager of the North-West German building and construction company.
