Bernhard Ayglerius

Bernhard Ayglerius OSB , also Bernard Ayglier (* around 1216 in Lyon , † April 4, 1282 in Montecassino ) was Abbot of Montecassino, cardinal and theological writer .

Life

He entered the Benedictine order in the Savigny Monastery in the Archdiocese of Lyon . Pope Innocent IV appointed him papal chaplain. Around 1244 he met the Roman Rota as an auditor . Since 1256 he was abbot of the Lérins monastery on the Île Saint-Honorat . Around 1263 he was appointed abbot of Monte Cassino by Urban IV , which he remained until his death. Bernhard brought the monks back from emigration and reformed monastic life. In San Germano he founded a hospital and, at the request of Thomas Aquinas , allowed the Dominicans to build a church there. Charles of Anjou called him to the Kingdom of Sicily around 1266 , where Bernhard became the king's advisor.

Between 1265 and 1268 Pope Clement IV made him cardinal, but Bernhard never took part in a conclave . He was a legate in France to fight the Albigensians and a legate in Constantinople. After his return to Montecassino, he convinced King Charles I to withdraw his troops from a nearby castle.

His tomb in the Montecassino Abbey does not have any badges and there is no epitaph .

Works

Bernhard wrote a commentary on the Rule of Benedict and a Speculum monachorum , a text for the correct behavior of monks. Registers of his documents have been preserved from his term of office .
