Bernhard Binkowski

Bernhard Binkowski (born March 2, 1912 in Neisse , Upper Silesia , † October 14, 2002 in Schorndorf , Baden-Württemberg ) was a German music teacher .

Life

Bernhard Binkowski, son of the journalist and workers secretary Emil Binkowski , was a student in Kansas City for a year after graduating from high school and studied school music at the State University of Music as well as English and Latin at the University of Cologne from 1932 to 1938 . He experienced first hand the dismissal of his professors Walter Braunfels and Hermann Abendroth and the Aryanization of the university. Despite the rejection of the regime and commitment in his Catholic environment, Binkowski was able to take up school service in 1938. Shortly afterwards he was enlisted as a soldier and was taken prisoner towards the end of the Second World War .

In 1946 he got a job as a high school teacher in the Swabian town of Schorndorf, and from 1954 he worked for the state government of Baden-Württemberg. In 1963 he was appointed professor and dean of the school music department at the Stuttgart University of Music , and from 1966 to 1972 he was also the university's prorector . Binkowski was in international demand as a music teacher and was repeatedly in demand as a university teacher at US universities in Eugene , San Francisco and Ann Arbor . In 1977 he retired.

He had been a member of the Association of German School Musicians (vds) since 1956 , from 1959 regional chairman of the VDS Baden-Württemberg, from 1966 deputy national chairman and from 1971 to 1979, succeeding Egon Kraus, national chairman of the VDS. He was also involved in the board of directors and working groups of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) and from 1976 to 1984 was head of the “Music in Schools and Teacher Education” commission. He was an advisor to several German ministries of culture and the German Music Council .

Bernhard Binkowski has published numerous music educational works and books. His work "Musik um uns" became a standard work.

In 1964 Bernhard Binkowski was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Cardinal Tisserant and invested in Cologne Cathedral on December 5, 1964 by Lorenz Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was most recently an officer of the order.

He was married to Eva Vosfeldt. His brother is the journalist, publicist and newspaper publisher Johannes Binkowski .
