Life
Bernhard Otto von Hedemann was a son of the gentleman on Hemmelmark with Morberg and Grünenhof, Louisenberg and Hohenstein Johann Christoph Georg von Hedemann (born July 18, 1729 in Dorste ; † June 17, 1781 in Hemmelmark ) from his second marriage to Davidia Margaretha von Drieberg (* August 5, 1735 in Schleswig ; † November 23, 1795 in Hemmelmark ). He had nine brothers and two sisters; Hartwig Johann Christoph von Hedemann was his oldest brother.
At the age of 12 he entered the Danish military service as a cadet in 1775 and became a second lieutenant in the cavalry regiment in 1779 . In 1783 he was first lieutenant and received in 1788 the character as captain . From 1793 chief of a squadron , he was designated major in 1803 and prime major in 1806 . In 1809 he received the character and in 1810 the patent as a lieutenant colonel . Characterized colonel since 1812 , he became chief of the Holstein cavalry regiment on October 18, 1813. In the Battle of Sehestedt on December 10, 1813, he suffered a serious head injury. He lost an eye and suffered permanent damage; that he survived at all was attributed to the medical art of the Kiel surgeon Johann Leonhard Fischer . Fischer's life-saving treatment by Hedemann was considered by contemporaries to be the greatest masterpiece of the art of wound medicine .
In 1816 he took his leave, where he was given the character of major general. He was a royal Danish chamberlain .
Bernhard Otto von Hedemann died after a long suffering from the consequences of his wound.
He was married to Antoinette (Jeannette) Elisabeth Christiane, born in 1785. by Scriver (1764-1848). The couple had five children, including the Danish court marshal Adolph Otto Wilhelm von Hedemann (1793–1849). The Danish admiral Anton Rudolph von Hedemann (1816–1897) was his grandson.
