Bernhard Walter (born March 3, 1942 in Markgröningen ; † January 11, 2015 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) was a German bank manager . He was spokesman for the board of directors of Dresdner Bank and chairman of the supervisory board of the German construction and services group Bilfinger SE .

Life

After his banking apprenticeship, Walter studied at the Württemberg Administration and Business Academy (VWA). He then worked for Dresdner Bank , where he became a board member in 1987 and, in 1998, succeeded Jürgen Sarrazin as board spokesman . Under his aegis, the entire Eastern European business of Dresdner Bank was rebuilt and re-established after the fall of the Wall . During his tenure as spokesman for the board of directors, he distinguished himself above all through his uncompromising approach during the tax scandal at Dresdner Bank, in which some top managers were involved. The idea - announced on March 9, 2000 - also fell during his term of office, together with Rolf-E. Breuer , the German Bank and Dresdner Bank as part of a strategic partnership with the Alliance to merge into a big money home. But Walter ultimately failed due to internal quarrels - according to the FAZ it was " the resistance of the investment bankers at Deutsche Bank " and, when the merger failed on April 5, 2000, resigned his office and resigned from the board. His successor was Bernd Fahrholz , during whose tenure the bank was sold to Allianz SE on July 23, 2001 .

Walter founded the Frauenkirche Foundation for the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche , which he chaired until the end, while he was already in charge of the bank's Eastern Europe . Walter received, among other things, the Golden Hen of the MDR and numerous other prizes for his commitment . On 7 September 2007 Walter was with the Chairman of the Society for the Promotion of reconstruction of the Frauenkirche Dresden, Ludwig Güttler , and building director Eberhard Burger , the Federal Cross of Merit awarded for its commitment to the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden. On March 18, 2009, Walter received the title of "Honorary Doctor of Engineering" from TU Dresden , Dr.-Ing. E. h. , awarded for that very commitment. In 1995, Walter initiated the Stifterbrief campaign, which significantly supported the reconstruction with donations amounting to millions and made it possible in the first place.

He represented Dresdner Bank and its later parent company Commerzbank AG on the supervisory boards of several DAX 30 companies such as Daimler AG , Deutsche Telekom AG , Henkel KGaA and the MDAX- listed construction and services group Bilfinger , where he was from 2006 until 2014 chairman of the supervisory board. In November 2008 he took over the position of the supervisory board of the real estate financier Hypo Real Estate, which was already struggling to survive after losing billions . He was also chairman of the board of trustees of the TU Dresden and chairman of the supervisory board of the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences . On July 23, 2010 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Leipzig Graduate School of Management.

Bernhard Walter died on January 11, 2015 at the age of 72.
